VSTs and AU, an overview of all types of external plug-ins.

Audio plugins, also known as audio effects or virtual instruments, are software components that enhance or modify the sound of audio signals in digital audio workstations (DAWs) or other audio software applications.

Think of audio plugins as virtual devices that you can add to your audio software to shape, manipulate, or process audio in various ways. They allow you to apply different effects or simulate the behaviour of hardware equipment right within your computer.

Hindenburg Supports every mayor type of external plus ins, such as; VST, VST3 and AU.

There are two main types of audio plugins:

  1. Effects Plugins: These plugins alter the characteristics of audio signals. They can add reverb, delay, distortion, equalization, compression, modulation (such as chorus or flanger), and more. Effects plugins help you achieve different sounds, create ambiance, or correct/improve the audio quality.

  2. Virtual Instruments (VSTs): These plugins simulate the sounds of traditional musical instruments or create entirely new sounds. Virtual instruments are often used to compose music, produce electronic sounds, or play melodies using MIDI controllers. They can replicate the sounds of pianos, guitars, synthesizers, drums, and more.

Plugins are usually developed by third-party companies or individual developers and can be purchased or downloaded for free.

They are typically available in various formats like VST (Virtual Studio Technology), VST3, AU (Audio Unit), or AAX (Avid Audio eXtension), which are supported by different audio software applications.

By using audio plugins, producers and sound engineers can explore a vast array of creative possibilities, shape their audio recordings, and achieve professional-grade sound production without the need for physical hardware devices.

These audio plug-ins can be stored in various places on your computer depending on OS.
On a windows:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\VST or VST3 or any windows supported format, notibly NOT AU
On a Mac there are two locations, both a supported by Hindenburg.
/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST or VST3 or AU
/Users/frederikb.blauenfeldt/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST or VST3 or AU
Your audio plug in can be activated and shown under the effects tab, symbolized with the small three faders.
