I can't figure out how to best delete the gray space between regions? Is there a shortcut?

If you want to remove the gray space between regions, there is a more efficient method than manually dragging the downstream regions to close the gap.

If you triple-click the space between the regions, the space will get selected. 
You can then cut it using the 'X' key (or select Cut).
